For many people, Christmas is the most important holiday of the year, but if you’re just relocating to Houston, you may be missing your hometown traditions and unsure of where to go to celebrate. No need to worry! You already know that Houston is a big, bustling city with plenty of fun things to do. Whether you’re looking for a meaningful religious service, a way to connect with your new community, or just some fun, Houston has plenty to offer at Christmastime.
Enjoy a Christmas Eve church service
If you are a practicing Christian, it will be easy for you to find a meaningful Christmas Eve service in Houston. Our city is home to churches of almost every known denomination, as well as interdenominational churches. To find a church that speaks to your faith, check with your home church or your religious organization’s web site (for example, click here to find Catholic churches, here for United Methodist churches, and here for Friends/Quaker meetings). You can also find many of Houston’s churches, listed by denomination, at Churches-In.com.
Meet your new community
The Houston Press has your guide to the many events happening December 24 and 25, Christmasy and non-Christmasy, including plays, concerts, tours, museum exhibits, and more. There are also social groups, joined by all kinds of interests, gathering on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Some are celebrating the holiday, while others are gathering to celebrate their favorite interests. You can find them all by searching for Houston events by date on Meetup.com. Have some fun, celebrate in the way that speaks to you, and meet some new friends to enjoy for the rest of your time in Houston.
Dining out—whether or not you celebrate Christmas
Forget the stereotype of only Chinese food being available on Christmas Day. Many of Houston’s fine restaurants are open throughout the holiday. You can have excellent Chinese food, if you like, but you can also have Argentine, Mexican, Mediterranean, Italian, Swiss, Japanese, American classics, and more. B4-U-Eat online restaurant guide has a list of Houston restaurants that plan to be open on Christmas Day. Call first to be sure your chosen restaurant will be open on the day and at the time you’d like to go out.
