Houston Halloween Fun for Grown-Ups

Last week, we shared a roundup of safe, not-so-scary, family-friendly Halloween events happening around Houston—but Halloween is not just for kids. Some of the best things about Halloween are just for adults: Enjoy a good scare without worrying about next week's nightmares, put on a risque costume, enjoy a drink or two with some rocking tunes, and learn about the ghosts and horrors in your hometown's history. If you're new to Houston, or you simply haven't settled on your favorite way to celebrate, these resources can help you find your new favorite Halloween event with a grown-up edge:

Halloween Parties at Bars and Clubs

Haunted House Attractions

Is it more your style to get scared silly just for the fun of it? Houston has many haunted house attractions ready to startle and amaze you. About.com Houston has compiled a list with links. Choose the fright fest that most appeals to you.

Historical Hauntings

Do you prefer an old-fashioned ghost story (that just might be true) over scary spectacles? The Houston area is home to real haunted places that might be too scary for young children, but just right for adults. Visit nearby Galveston and take a tour of the Ashton Villa house museum, a 19th-century home usually enjoyed for its architectural beauty. In October, tour guides will share the many ghost stories attached to to the house. While you're in Galveston, you can also enjoy “Galveston's Haunted Harbor Experience,” a one-hour tour of Galveston Harbor. While you cruise on the historic Seagull II, you'll hear stories of pirates, cannibals, shipwrecks, and the great hurricane of 1900.

In Houston proper, the historic (and possibly haunted) La Carafe Cafe on Congress Street is hosting a “spiritualist style seance” like those that were popular at the turn of the 20th century. This event is billed as a “theatrical re-creation,” so there's no guarantee that real ghosts will appear, but you'll see how an old-fashioned seance is done, and maybe hear from one of the spirits that is said to haunt La Carafe.
