If your budget or lifestyle dictates that your next Houston apartment is on the smaller side, you don't have to sacrifice comfort. We've been all around this city and seen everything from studios to small loft spaces - and in the process, we've seen some really ingenious ideas for making the most of a small living space. Houston apartments range from any size imaginable, so this week we'll chat about some great ways to make the most of the space you call home, especially is it's under 600 square feet.
The key things to remember about a smaller Houston apartment is that most furniture out there isn't designed for these types of spaces. That means you have to put your thinking cap on and think two key things: vertical and multipurpose. Furniture that allows you to store vertically instead of horizontally will keep your furniture footprint small and space at a maximum. Think of a corner computer workstation with shelving up above - there will be a place for your computer, a printer, books, small storage boxes and CDs in one small space (and we're betting if you get the right workstation, you'll be taking up only a foot and a half on each side of your chosen corner!). Tall bookshelves, pub-style dining sets with counter-height barstools and vertically-oriented artwork will help you keep your floor space as open as possible while having all the storage and living space you need.
Another thing to consider is versatility. Maybe instead of a sofa, you opt for a great coffee table and plush floor cushions. When you don't have company or they aren't in use, you can stack the cushions in a corner and keep the floor space wide open. Futons come in a wide variety of designs and styles make great sofa-to-bed pieces. You can also pull double duty with a dining or bar area and a home workstation. Just make sure your chairs are the proper height so you son't get cramped sitting at the computer for long periods of time.
When in doubt, take a trek through stores like IKEA and Target. If there are two stores out there that understand how to make home decor and furnishings that make the most of small spaces, it's these! Your Houston apartment can be any size and still give you the maximum in living comfort and functionality. You just have to think outside the square footage.
