Moving out can be a real drag. Between all of the packing, hauling, cleaning and planning, how to you make sure that the process is as painless as possible? As a Houston apartment locator for many years, we've seen every possible move-out scenario. So today, we're going to share with you some tips on how to make your move-out simple instead of stressful. Start packing up and moving on!
Move Out Tip #1: When you give your move-out notice, ask the apartment manager for a copy of the move-out inspection checklist. This is the list they'll use during your walkthrough to determine if they'll charge any damages against your deposit. Do a walkthrough yourself with a watchful eye and make a list of anything that needs to be repaired or touched-up. If you need paint touch-ups, you can generally ask the maintenance department at your complex for a bit of paint (inside tip!).
Move Out Tip #2: Yes, they look for that! Move the fridge, stove and other appliances and CLEAN. You'd be surprised what gets lodged where, even inside of 6 to 12 months. If cleaning isn't up your alley, check out tip #3.
Move Out Tip #3: Hire a cleaning service. Plan on moving out a day early or early in the morning of your move-out date. When you're out, have the pros come in. Be sure to schedule a cleaning service at least 2 weeks in advance of your move out date to ensure availability. When you call around, ask if they have a move out cleaning package (many do) and ask what it includes. Compare that to your move-out walkthrough list. If carpet cleaning is a requirement, be sure to check the restrictions on what the complex will accept. Many want receipts and some insist on using truck-mounted carpet cleaning services only as they're a deeper cleaning method.
Move Out Tip #4: Be present for the move out walkthrough. This way, you can see what the apartment manager sees and if something isn't right, you can offer to fix it (some will let you). Better to agree on things and avoid an argument later if you skip out on the process.
Move Out Tip #5: Understand deposit refund procedures. While some complexes will refund you within 7 business days, others may take up to 30 days. Know before you go and that way, you can follow-up accordingly.
We hope the above tips help you plan for the other side of renting. We're always happy to help you with your Houston apartment search, from moving in and moving out to moving on!
