Pet-Friendly Houston: 4 Online Resources

When you and your pet are moving to our city, Houston Apartment Insiders can help you find the perfect pet-friendly apartment. Once you're settled, though, you'll want to know about all that Houston has to offer animal lovers. You'll be pleased to find that Houston is a very pet-friendly city. Here are just a few resources to help you find advice, events, advocacy, and maybe even a new pet!

Houston SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals)

Like the SPCA in any city, this is a one-stop-shop for every animal lover. Contact the Houston SPCA if you need to find help for a neglected or abused animal or if, heaven forbid, you're searching for a lost pet. If you're ready to add one more member to your family, keep in mind that birds and small mammals (like rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs and gerbils) are available for adoption, as well as dogs and cats. The Houston SPCA also offers great resources for pet care, training, understanding pet behavior, finding support groups for those who have lost a pet, and even preparing for disasters.

Houston Dog Park Association (HDPA)

Houston is a wonderful city for dogs, thanks in large part to the HDPA, which advocates for safe, friendly Houston dog parks. Check out our previous post on dog parks for the addresses of Houston's six city-run dog parks, where well-behaved pooches are welcome to run and play together off-leash. While you're enjoying a park, thank the HDPA, and don't forget to visit their site to find over 20 off-leash dog parks in the greater Houston area, learn their rules and etiquette, and find out how you can get involved to keep dog parks available and safe for years to come.

Houston Pet Talk

This print magazine and web site are full of news about everything pet-related in Houston. Online, choose from six blogs, each about a different subject: grooming, “petiquette,” advice from a vet, natural health, training, and advice for bird lovers. Check out the magazine to see ads for Houston pet-related retailers, calendars of pet-friendly events, and animal-oriented articles. You can subscribe through the web site to get each issue in print, or read the whole magazine online for free.

The Houston Chronicle's Pets Houston

The largest daily newspaper in Texas has devoted a section of its web site to all things pet-related. Search their classifieds to buy or adopt all kinds of pets—furry, feathered, or reptile. Enjoy pet-loving comics, including Garfield, Marmaduke and Get Fuzzy. You'll also find expert Q&A, pet photos, links to animal news stories, and plenty of blogs and online chat forums all about animals.
